Lycopene Blush

Lycopene Blush

A Poem by barleygirl
"

enjoying my tomato glut . . .

"

I could get all I need from a single vine
but tomato seeds said: look! here’s nine!

These arbason beauties plumped up fast
now in my apron a mountain’s amassed!

Ya think I’m ingesting too much lycopene?
(sweet red morsels stew in all that caffeine)

It’s not just that my pee has turned pink
I’m catching a whiff of tomato juice stink.

My cheeks are sporting a lycopene blush
eyebrows painted on with a crimson brush.

Crisp white nightgown has seen better nights
marinara hot flashes spilling scarlet blights.

With such a glut I fed my yellow dog a few
he sprouted a rosy wattle: c**k-a-doodle-dooo!

Necks craning o’er the fence so deer get a gobble
now a ruddy gut hangs down giving each a wobble.

Low-hanging fruit is marred by chipmunk chomp
drab rodents newly festooned with frilly red pomp.

Low-flying aircraft above my tomato plantation
my pungent ruby vibe jams their communication.

Neighborly harassment has gotten out of control
pot growers say the red’s so blatant it flags the patrol.

Nearby stoners think they’re growing purple haze
but plumping buds have slowly turned a flaming blaze.

Lycopene must be seeping to our ground water
havoc in the hood caused by tomato squatter!

A few years ago I threw some tomatoes in the compost, and in the spring added the (what I thought was) finished compost to the garden beds. Not long after we had several tomato plants sprout and by the end of the summer I couldn't give the surplus away. There were so many. That's when I learned that plants that plant themselves will do far better than the ones I plant purposefully. An odd fact of gardening life.

This year, I planted a single plant as I was beginning a new garden and didn't have much space yet. It was so damn hot that even the tomatoes were miserable and almost every bud dropped instead of fruiting. It's finally cooled off enough that the plant is setting some fruit. Every year is different and ripe for learning.

It sounds like you've got a tomato forest there!

I really enjoyed the whimsy and fun you shared with this one, Margie. What fun is gardening if it doesn't bring out the curious, mischievous kid in us. Your creativity and imagination are inspiring.

Laughed out loud at some of this Margie . . . oh those poor pot growers . . . tagged by the tomatoes.
By the way . . . do you grow to-maw-toes or to-may-toes?!

Aw, I wish I had some of those big, plump, ripe tomatoes. I try to grow them each year and fail miserably. Not even low-flying grasshoppers bother to buzz my pitiful crop. Be honest, now--what are you fertilizing them with?

I envy you and your green thumb (red thumb). We used to have a garden and tried to grow them along with zucchini, but between the drought, the rabbits and the deer it proved to be a loosing battle.

I was thinking of having tomatoes on toast as a quick lunchtime snack... now, all I can think of are a few or most of your poem, you wicked woman!!! ' .. PLEASE, I beg you, no writing about zucchini.. or courgettes as they're more or less correctly called in the UK! xx
