Lame Gardening

Lame Gardening

A Poem by barleygirl

"

Some avid gardeners plan out
neat rows and straight furrows
but since I’m lame and disabled
my garden has fallen together
through the haphazard years
since sometimes I can barely walk
(forget about carrying a big pot
full of dirt with tall swaying plant)
and so it always astounds me how
much the total tapestry delights
gazing out at my profuse expanse
of color-splash and spry featheries
sanctuary of marijuana handprints
punctuated by lavender swords
quail bee-boppin’ the broccoli
fennel sprays of bright yellow
hawk squawks away pesky rodents
as coral cockle bells tinkle a tune
above hardy succulent spreads
hummingbirds do a pollen pirouette
since honeybees rarely appear
early plump tomato orbs droop
and long shiny cucumbers jut
deer dawn-patrol the fence-line
chomping down watermelon vines
but a stray spaghetti squash cowers
hanging begonia on a bloom-cusp
blue jays are faked out, pecking
an old strawberry patch out back
one for the blackbird
and one for the crow
satisfied with my peace offering
not noticing the new patch
a thrust of dangling berry fountains
first-year persimmon sprouts eke on
as second-year Fuji trees fluff out
such abundance well-arranged
seemingly designed into a tapestry
clearly created by the divine gardener
since my day-to-day lame puttering
couldn’t have conceived all this.

Margie, what I read hear is blessed harmony! Despite my OCD tendencies, I love gardens and backyards like what you've described here. It seems you have the ideal balance with nature. It's as if you had a private agreement with Mother Nature. She keeps the critters from eating and destroying the plants you love, and you keep up the peace offerings.

My brother suffers from progressive MS, and he's now mostly in wheelchair. I will tell you it's crushing him because he always kept a perfectly manicured lawn and garden. I hope he'll come to the realization that beauty can happen naturally, and sometimes human hands and blades don't make the best gardens. Love the imagery and the accompanying photo.

S**t. You make me jealous--especially the mention of tomatoes. You may think of your gardening as haphazard, but you're doing better than me. I LOVE vine-ripe tomatoes and plant a few every year, only to see all my watering and fertilizing yield next to nothing. No, you're pretty good at it and probably have a green thumb. Wanna trade me some of those delicious red things for some jalapeno's ?

Margie, your writing infuses lovely, natural imagery and vignettes into every joyful line. Your talent for gardening is a gift that you poetically celebrate. It seems to add such bliss, health and peace to your life. Upright or not, you richly paint for us magnificent brushstrokes of fennel and hawks and hummingbirds as your ‘everyday miracles’- marijuana gets a deserved nod too! I love to escape into your writing. It’s like a breath of fresh, untainted air- especially now. Thank you sisterfriend!

Quite a word picture here. Makes you feel like you're there looking at it. Liked the picture, too; you're almost camouflaged. Good work. I'd rather have a marijuana handprint than a carbon footprint any day.

Being in a garden is therapeutic. A place to get lost knowing something beautiful has been planted. A separate future to look forward to. The perfect escape. Nice job! Definitely enjoyed it.

I like other people's gardens, especially the ones that look a whole lot better than mine.
Though gardening is in the eye of the beholder. Think that's what they say.Though I think anyone in a wheelchair looking at my garden would possibly shoot me for neglect. Concrete everywhere should be made law. lol
