Recreational versus Medicinal

Recreational versus Medicinal

A Poem by barleygirl
"

stoner classifications . . .

"

In California we puff our pot recreationally
a freedom voted in by ten states nationally
the prior twenty years we had to act clinical
proving our drug vice was purely medicinal.

After years of open toking, a quirk remains
as old hippie-stoners smolder their brains
if anyone looks at them cross-eyed cynical
they’ll insist their dosage is purely medicinal.

A careful charade of measuring milligrams
while closet-hoarding a stash of kilograms
with others gone they can grab a big pinch
long bong hit that would make a fireman flinch.

Another way this delusion reads incredible
a spiked brownie is properly called an “edible”
metering cannabinoids all carefully regulated
then throwing the munch to be fully medicated.

Possibly it’s the lingering threat of the feds
who might bring a drug war down on our heads
so many stoners still perform this rigamarole
insisting marijuana plays a medicinal role.

Author's Note

barleygirl
I DO believe in marijuana's medicinal properties, despite this spoof on all the people who defensively claim their use is purely medicinal. After taking a handful of pain meds (both prescription & over-the-counter) for 20 years (fibromyalgia & neck injury), I finally reverted to being a stoner again (hadn't touched it since my 20's) & after using pot daily for the past five years or so, I gradually weaned myself off all pain pills & all other prescribed meds. Yes, I'm in extreme pain at times, but it's not that much different than when I was taking a ton of pills & I'm not such a bitch now! *wink! wink!*

Well, Margie, I must say I admire the craft here, as always. You've taken a topic I feel strongly about, and made it an enjoyable poem. And, the author's note made me laugh. Love the sense of humor.

I've never smoked or consumed marijuana in any form. Not bragging about it or denying whatever the benefits others enjoy. I've watched a young family member use it for years, and it destroyed his motivation. But, I know that's one personal experience. I'd prefer everyone, including the sleazy politicians, just admit they like weed for the same reasons I like whiskey. Then, we could all move on, and the government could tax the hell out of it like they do my bourbon and Scotch. And, for the record, I've never thought of you as a "b*tch." :)

a big industry hidden or not. many people swear by it for pain relief. it is even available now by prescription (further proof of its medicinal qualities). course the stoners will use any excuse or reason to get high. forever it was illegal in massachusetts (the insidious evil), now suddenly is legal (because state taxes it heavily for revenue). recreational selling shops are springing up all around like those plants. if i remember correctly, you live in the midst of cannabis country.

i wouldn't mess with that old bag in the pic. damned nasty in both hands ... :)

Haven't touched weed since the 60's, although back then the preference was for hashish. It's legal in Canada, although being that the government is in charge is it any wonder they've screwed the system up?
Most evenings I sit on the back porch with a glass of wine while a fragrant cloud of smoke wafts by my nose from the young guy two doors down.

P.S. what is the axe for? Are the bunnies attacking your garden again? ;>}

I admire both the subject and the write here Marie. I've not imbibed since the seventies although It has been suggested by an old college friend for my arhtritis. I'm waiting for two new knees. And I chose the wrong time to wait for an op or two didn't I?
Whatever it did to me when young I don't know. I suggest the tobacco was equally as bad if not worse. Dope was the only reason I smoked. Now I don't smoke or drink but I do comfort eat so perhaps I'm doing myself as much harm. I dropped acid when younger as well. I know what I would rather have. To quote C,S&Y perhaps now I won't have to hide the roaches.
I am all in favour of using whatever works medicinally and at least this way the drug companies will not be making obscene amounts of money and holding the rest of us to ransom. Although once they get on to it as you so rightly suggest who knows?
And by the way I love the poem structure and no I'm not stoned.
As Ken Keasey I think once said 'No left turn unstoned'

my sometimes excessive use of oxygen is purely medicinal too... they have been trying to tax me on that for years but when the collector is around I breathe very shallow and they cant get a good read:/ same with my use of edibles but the dirty b******s tax me at the market for that stuff! unless of course i grow my own food but they will eventually figure out a way to tax me for that too I'm sure:( the funny part of this all is that ultimately we actually vote for these guys to tax everything including recreational use of pot of which is silly even when it is used solely for pain we still figure out a way to tax it on an already overtaxed soul and we of course vote for that cause that's what we do we can not as a society allow one to be undertaxed and that is a fact what horrible tact

Ah the controversial topic of cannabis and it’s medicinal properties. Love this piece.
I don’t oppose the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes at all and I think there’s enough evidence around to support its use. The vast majority of the problem is that like most drugs is when it’s use is abused and for the wrong reasons. Thank you

Love this poem... and your rhyming words to describe the medicinal and recreational effects of pot ( names a many)... I do believe in both uses....though I don’t indulge but use to....and I don’t shun those who are indeed pot-heads.. it’s their choice...your words are magical, wish I could write like that! Well done as always, B

Of course!
I think the poem speaks to artificial classifications. Pot was illegal, now it is quasi-legal in some states. The classifications and norms we value are largely arbitrary- many times necessary, but arbitrary. And the picture just caps it all off! Your funny little poem brings this arbitrariness to light.

Although it's still illegal in UK, I think it's just a ploy by our government to keep it exclusive. I'm sure that most of their decisions are made whilst they're on a "high". They only leave us miserable - as THEY are the pain.
Loved your poem, though, emphasising the "scientific acccuracy" of the dosage.
