Summer Rambles

Summer Rambles

A Story by barleygirl
"

just an old fart rambling on . . .

"

While much of the west/southwest broils in extreme heat, it's been refreshingly mild here on the central California coast. The damp marine layer cools the area down into the high 40's (9*C) every morning so it doesn't heat up until late afternoon. Only hot for a few hours . . . not hotter than low 90's (33*C), which is mild for Arroyo Seco summers.

First half of this summer, I saw no honeybees. Wasps and bumblebees are abundant, along with several varieties of big ugly hornets. The hornets have disappeared now and the many hummingbirds do a thorough job of dabbing pollen around since the honeybees have been hiding. Suddenly this past week, hundreds of honeybees discovered my garden out here in the wilderness and they’re now creating a loud buzz all around my garden every day.

Sometimes I hear a few pre-dawn coyote yips down by Piney Creek, just below my bluff, but last night around midnight a pack was circling the area, yipping and talking up a storm for more than a half hour. It's the longest I've heard them coming in so close and being so noisy. The dogs in the area returned the coyote conversation and it didn't chase the critters off!

It's such a pleasant place you describe, bordering on idyllic. (At least in my estimation) Such cool nights and mornings! My poor ac kicks on at all hours. The mention of no honey bees made realize that I've not seen any, either. I hope your life continues just is for many, many moons.

hi margie, i'm back again for today only .. been very busy with family history.
i love your home area rambling description, a little peek into your world.
we don't have humming birds & coyotes in australia, but we have a native dog called a dingo, which looks a bit like a pointy-eared, blonde labrador, & we also have about 14% of the world's parrots.

stay safe, cheerio carola

it is good that you have a family member that can speak Coyote that comes in handy in your parts:)
all interesting
The buzzing community is much the same here ( not many honey bees) and also the beautiful hummers.
They often stop mid-air about 2 feet away and have a good look at us. Quite cute
Have done quite a bit of bird feeding on the patio and they are becoming so comfortable with us, we have to walk around them because they are none too inclined to move while they are eating.
Absolutely zero coyotes in the area ( I saw a recent program on how they and others, are moving into the inner city)
I think we might be a bit warmer here which surprises me
All part of the great and wonderful Pacific Coastline
Take care BG

Alls well dear BG.............
thank you for taking me to your blessed isolation and the beauty of your surroundings.

Such a clash...I am reading your piece and in the background listening to CNN talking about a rigged election (sure) and more virus deaths.
Oh I have coyotes in my neighborhood, but they keep their distance...the foxes are beautiful though...I love seeing them, prettiest animal there is in my estimation. Hope you are well,
j.

not many of us have experienced the aura of
wild and free. It's like chatting with you on a
Veranda where the cool breeze may tease your
imagination. Be sill and consider the beauty of Nature.

Thank you for the veranda chat, which does my heart a bunch of good! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
Now in total contrast to your idyllic life. Two drunks are shouting at each other out in my street. The mad woman across from me has now decided her dog is actually her baby. But even worse, you now have to phone the Bar to see if you can get a table to get a drink. What the hell has happened to the world.
