Sunshine Shimmy

Sunshine Shimmy

A Poem by barleygirl
"

inspired by old photograph . . .

"

He air-twirled my inner tube
as I ran and shrieked “gimmee!”
summertime’s easy for a rube
like me or my brother Jimmy.

Didn’t discard me back at camp
to cavort with girls his own age
water frolic may beckon a scamp
the whole water hole was his stage.

Floating below I spied his ledge
watching my brother rock-climb
ice cold water set nerves on edge
his cannonball splash was sublime.

Floaty tufts escape the cottonwoods
Jimmy tweaks a crawdad in my face
the flirty girls latch onto some hoods
stillness frosts the pool with glace.

Back then he vowed to never leave
he was so young and full of himself
anything he said I would believe
I still feel him perched on my shelf.

Nowadays when autumn acorns skitter
I can still splash our sunshine shimmy
inner tube gobbles the bubble glitter
close my eyes and I see young Jimmy.

Its a rare boy that will pay such attention to a kid sister when he can go play with girls his own age. But its plain to see he doted on you and there were some wonderful times shared. No wonder you still feel him perched on your shelf. The last verse absolutely tells me how autumn still takes you back to those sunshine memories and your wonderful brother Jimmy. And what an adorable picture of you both!

Paints a very realistic portrait, Margie. I always wanted a brother, am the eldest of three sisters. Your imaginings would I'll bet ring true to those fortunate enough to have had an attentive, colorful character like Jimmy to look up to. Did you intend to have it feel like he'd passed away with that last stanza? It's what I thought. Engaging, interesting, visual. Could take these characters into a short story!

Delightfully nostalgic Margie. You know every now and then I get the photo albums out too to go back in time and remember how we were as siblings. Those memories are precious and since I have already lost one of my brothers, they become even more so with time. Fun days, young days, sibling love.

Breathing too much smoke! Both kinds!
I have recently rediscovered a bunch of old home movies from my childhood I found them in an old box of pictures I thought I had lost:) In those old home movies so many of them are of swimming at this old grove my dads family would rent for family picnics every year. It was a bittersweet experience rewatching these films so many of that side of the family is gone now. But a theme has occured to me in the aftermath that even as a small boy my head was always in the clouds I remember a lot! but the things i remember most are the things that danced in my imagination even way back then

dear Margie... an adorable photo of you and Jimmy.
I remember Creeks and Rivers where you could swim
and stay Cool. I had an uncle Jimmy (my Mom's youngest brother).
My Mom was 17 when she had me so her little brother and sister
were very young. I love Autumn Acorns and our Rappahannock River.
The young people still take Inner tubes to float on the River...
perhaps found them in Granpa's Garage. Hope you are safe in
your Mountain Retreat. fondly, Pat

Beautifully rendered Quatrains, Dear Margie,

In spot-on rhymes, vividly presented imagery, syntactically smooth as silk flow, and downright masterful poetic skill, you never disappoint.
And, with excellent pictures to accompany your sweet sentimental tale of ideal youthful times.
However, being familiar with your formative years' history, I see this as a beautiful fantasy, created through the wishful depths of your more benevolently, warmhearted nature … a nostalgically fictional, wonderfully-effulgent, a "Sunshine Shimmery" moment in amazingly creative imagination -- equally as sad, a tender illusion.

Margie, you both steal my heart away and break it … but ohhh, it's wonderful how you do. : )
Big hugs, lovely lady-poet! ⁓ Richard 🍃

A glorious reflection, dear Margie, and one full of happy memories yet with an undertone of longing and sadness. You have painted us a lovely descriptive picture of your youthful summers and i definitely relate to those water fun filled days wrapped in a rubber tube and splashing around without a care. It's a lovely childhood memory, and one written so well here. I love the photo, too. It's a beautiful shot. Fine reminiscing! :))

There's something about water, whether creeks, river, lake or for me - sea - that keeps memories meandering through life, don't you think. Maybe its the light of a warm day or the touch of water on one's skin, the sound of laughter along with the splashes, the special moments with a special friend, Then, the etched forever sadness of time to part. There are so many smiles in this post, perhaps strokes of genius when it comes to your childhood memories Methinks you treasure those emotional times back then, times you juggle in denial, perhaps. Bye for now, fondly of course. Can just about see the thumbnail , the one shown above your words hopefully recreates what you want, need.

Can't wink wink at you cos I can't do it even once! Take it as sent by ompus lompus mail. Take care, luv, keep safe. Please very much.
