Gift of Flight

Gift of Flight

A Poem by barleygirl
"

inspired by friend's photography . . .

"

Whenever life starts to bog me down
blanket of ash buries my bleak town
plum losing sight of my playground
then He hands me the gift of flight.

Can’t see a forest full of burnt trees
blossoms no longer entice the bees
millions suffer deep loss from disease
still He extends a scenario so light.

When I can’t endure yet another blow
serenity seemingly a ceaseless no-show
I stumble an overlooked bliss meadow
somehow everything feels all right.

Seek tranquility despite all the noise
don’t let demons destroy my poise
sadly I can’t reach all my chosen toys
still abundance brims to delight.

Touching me through a friend’s eyes
a calm healing enclave among Thais
spirituality pulsating from the skies
I stumble on a timely gift of flight.

Author's Note

barleygirl
I've written poems to Randy's photography before. It's uncanny how he sends me a load of incredible photography last evening just when I'm stuck in a rut & trying to figure out how to shake off this funk . . . the state of California welcomes our leader today so he can insult us by saying we need to rake our forests but never acknowledging the millions of dead trees from climate change & drought . . . removing them an impossibly expensive task for the vast forests that cover the western USA. I can't even get started on this or I'll go ballistic & that's why Randy's photography transported me to a very different place.

good one bgirl and the photo of a not so much younger Margie is very good, as well as the sunset in Thailand.
Don't you guys rake your forests at least once a month? I'll be up north in the Ottawa Valley next week and I'll take my leaf rake with me. (YEAH! RIGHT!)
Ontario is no stranger to forest fires ... there have been some doozies in the past ...

glad you shared this here as well as FB ... killer closing line says i! knowing you ... i know what your play things are ... your beautiful heart for the natural things around you .. we are suffering with you and CA as it burns so out of control ... perhaps a change that allows clearing brush and making clear cuts is in order .. far too many fires .. far too much loss of forested lands ... luv ya babe! your poem and that pic are the light in a dark tunnel .. well done .. gets better re-reading my friend

I did not read your author's note because I don't want my view of the poem to be tinged by a color other than my own experience. I like this work because even though I could not connect to some lines, generally it was an easy read with relatable emotions.

I long for the gift you mentioned! I can still fly but less frequently now compared to 10 years ago.. castles and magnificent virgin shores came to life at the snap of my fingers. Writing was not only a breeze, it pleasantly robbed me of my sleep and I ended my day with a huge grin on my face and the electric joy of a child at the thought of continuing a certain work the next day or sharing it with others...but with gifts come a price: I used to fly to infinite worlds at will but I also crashed horribly back in the days. When it was good it was startling gold and when it was bad it was tragic...Icarus? And on the other hand with the absence of a gift comes a price too: I no more cry in the belly of the night or shatter or fall from heights.. and it is peaceful (but dangerously tedious as well)..

Some of my favorite lines:
Seek tranquility despite all the noise
don’t let demons destroy my poise

Thank you for sharing.
Never stop writing!

You're right, it's a gorgeous picture. I am amazed that with all the devastation you see and I suppose, feel around you, you can still see the bright side of things. In so many ways, I find you amazing Margie.

So beautiful Margie. This should be a song for the times. Friends like your Randy provide spiritual support and relief when most needed. They truly give us the precious "gift of flight"- through space, through time, heart to heart...Love the sweet pic of both of you and Randy's inspiring sunset pic. You know you are in my thoughts and prayers and your posted Cali photos show us what an inferno is like. Stay strong and brave. and take good care my sisterfriend... P.S. look for me on your "flights"! xo
