Polar Turtleneck

Polar Turtleneck

A Poem by barleygirl
"

polar vortex is comin' . . .

"

Way up yonder where polar bears nap
swirling vortex forms an arctic hubcap
we prefer a bracing turtleneck with snap
when it sags, we catch a sub-zero zap.

A polar vortex seeks the stratosphere
but it’ll wreak havoc on folks down here
drooping way down on the hemisphere
a frigid fortnight congeals this new year.

Obligatory face masks corral each puff
if quarantine handcuffs aren’t enough
aloof arctic deities now dish out guff
Midwest pummel of blinding white stuff.

Limp polar turtleneck won’t freeze me
down in a warm dry desert we call Cali
those biffed by this brutal cold banshee
hate when I whine about my chilly forty.

Author's Note

In the interior of this country, it could get down to minus 40*F for two weeks when the polar vortex sags south like it's reportedly doing, while here in California I whine becuz 40*F is too cold for me!

Your use of the term "banshee" is perfect and most fitting. Wonderful poem. In the Dakotas, she blows the same two inches of snow back and forth until she wears it out.

I look at some places affected by really low temperatures and ponder on where I was born - only ever gets to like minus 10 or so in Winter and that too is rare but when I compare to other cold places it doesn't seem so cold and people moan if I moan about being cold lol ...it is all relative I guess but my thoughts do go to those in such cold places...mind you - the Winter seems to be weaker than when I was young, maybe my perspective has changed but it seems less harsh weather wise in some ways. Your poem reminds us all that nature truly is the boss. Stay warm and well Margie x

PS The use of Banshee in the poem is epic:)

I was completely ignorant of lockdown until the third stanza. Prior to this it felt like fresh and free air! 'Limp polar turtleneck won’t freeze me' - I love the defiance of this final stanza; against the meteorological banshee, the political one, and the medical one, too!

If I could share with you some of the rain mounting on my roof Margie, I would!
The frigid air is cold for the soul; some of have to put up with it! but the masks are for all of us, cold or temperate, and the New Year was dark and cold, despite the warm desert air. Again your images are perfect and those turtle necks do nothing to protect us. We each have our own comfortable inner temperature which gets out of wack when the vortex changes. Well done as usual Marge

I’m glad! You get great weather !
This has such great rhyme and imagery! I am a California based person too, but am also fortunate enough to be closer to Lake Tahoe and get some snow, though I can't imagine sub40!

-40 is too much
Never gets that cold here but when you are as warm as (you) usually are, I can see a whine or twoo @ 40
We are back and forth 10ish (30ish) but wet and could use a touch of that vortex to put a snow pack up above

Even the dogs avert their eyes . . .
we will be playing tennis tomorrow...37* it will be...
but if it snows I may have trouble getting there...my arctic hubcaps are attached to my

the tennis might be endless love.

Being a grit, I'm not too fond of extreme cold, either. But forty isn't exactly Siberia. I guess it's all a matter of what you're accustomed to.
