Broccoli Blues

Broccoli Blues

A Poem by barleygirl
"

thanks Unca Dave for the shove . . .

"

As ginger oak leaves fall and flutter
my sun-facing sills are seedling clutter
Aquarius dawns and I sow some seeds
prep a season of produce proceeds.

Upon petite soil plots I am doting
drop a tiny dot sealed with coating
soon thrusting up its distinctive quark
my cruciferous future makes its mark.

Later broccoli fronds in crowded fans
beg to be transferred to bigger cans
with summer scorch and Miracle Gro
a bulky shadow each plant does throw.

By fall my pampered crop is wondrous
popping up pebbled heads so bulbous
craving broccoli with five minutes of steam
donning a dollop of French cultured cream.

Upon awakening to a boisterous whoop
a flock of birds doing the broccoli swoop
hungry hundreds with peevish pecking
thick massive leaves all swiftly wrecking.

Within minutes, my broccoli wiped out
lacking a shotgun, I stomp and shout
all spindly spines with tatters are trussed
as lingering culprits tweet nonplussed.

As much as I love to write about nature, this is why I don't wax poetic about birds.

This is clever and very amusing to read - while also sharing your pain as a vegetable grower (but we have more trouble with caterpillars than we do with birds). Better luck with the growing this year! I like the phrase cruciferous future - cruciferous is a great word for poetry, but there are perhaps not so many poems about cabbages et al.

Those birds certainly don't care one way or another about who grew the broccoli. Can't be trusted. I like that you play with the words and the way that they sound, this improves the poem for me. I like the slant rhymes, but I feel like this poem would work with or without rhymes. It's a fun sounding poem, and I like that there is comedy here.

Don't suppose you have a shotgun just for that occasion of birds or sly foxes sneaking around.
On the plus side, this could give you kudos in gods garden for looking after his little friends. You don't have an arc in your back garden do you, cos I'm told that's instant entry. I'm ruled out, cos nobody bought me a bob the builder starter kit.

i've never grown broccoli but i always had a summer garden out back. i'll never forget the year i grew lettuce. all the plants were doing great. we had planned a one week getaway to the shore and i was thinking what a great salad we would have when we returned but lo and behold, the rabbits had other ideas. i was irate when i saw the plants chomped down to the ground. great write, opening line grabbed and the rest never let go of it's delicious, disappointed flow ... :)

Oh my goodness! You should have called me to chase those pesky birds away! All that long drawn care and anticipation came to naught! Loved the flawless, lovely rhyming in this poem, the rich visuals and the tale of birdy woes that had me raging here while they tweet nonplussed!
"broccoli with five minutes of steam
donning a dollop of French cultured cream" - such a healthy, yummy treat too....Loved this poem Margie! They may have wrecked your broccoli but they certainly fired up your pen.

You need an attack bunny in your garden, Margie Barley, a big one with no front teeth so it cant eat your crops but will be willfully jealous of others that can peck at them redoubling his efforts as garden guard bunny! all you will need is a good food processor and some mushy carrots to feed him at night:)

I really like this poem. It's educational, creative in what it's about and how it's written, about nature which I love. It started as a guild to how to plant to a story about how you fed the birds (I'm not being mean just thought it was a funny way of putting it. ) wonderfully penned. Tyfs

So sad that the birds came and ate all the broccoli! It really spoils your sense of pride; planting from seeds to an actual vegetable is amazing and beautiful.....put up some scarecrows, I see that a lot around here in people’s gardens...nice write Margie
