On High Seas

On High Seas

A Poem by barleygirl
"

my proclivities surge . . .

"

Woosh! Skitter-dunk! Swirly-dooo!
Surging is ceaseless, a jetty corkscrew!
Foamy and frothy in shimmy shampoo
tide came in . . . terra firma went adieu.

Ahoy! Voyage upon relentless ripples
invigorating spray to sprig the n*****s
a year-long sloop-jag of jazzy diddles
awash in enigma and racy riddles.

It took a year for my spunk to bonk
reverberating now like ear to conch
high seas buffeted on a beastly bronc
then island-ditched, a worthless wonk.

The moment seafaring feet hit land
reconfigured what it meant to stand
a gentler curse would be death by quicksand
than to bounce along on a rubberband.

Long after that sea trek, life undulates
as the land rises up and then deflates
at times my navigation up and rotates
and my equilibrium needs to fluctuate.

I’m afraid my mastoid is forever void
not to mention, my wits are destroyed
my rhyming rhizoid is now unemployed
since my last monorhyme took an asteroid.

Cheers! Never fear! I kinda like it here!
Why did I need a balanced inner ear?
My proclivities surge on bipolar beer!
Who needs gravity? Eternity is unclear!

* * * * * * * *

Note: I’m reading the book Cruise of the Snark by Jack London, detailing his real-life journey from San Francisco down to the South Seas in a small sailing vessel back around 1907. It took a month to go from San Francisco to Honolulu, their first stop, and he wrote a full chapter (dramatic and hilarious) about how wobbly their legs were after being back on land. This poem was inspired when I thought about how many relationships in our lives leave us wobbly, too!

I really felt what you were trying to say because the wording felt very bouncy which I enjoyed. It gave me that rippling effect of bonking back and forth which correlated nicely with your topic and story behind it. Thank you for allowing me to read this.

There is nothing like being off-kilter to set a person spinning and bouncing around trying to regain their equilibrium. Being an up and downer myself, I can relate to this.

Being from "down the shore" as we say here in New Jersey, I have always felt drawn to the sea. Your poem has whetted my appetite for it again. I have a "Mini-fish" sailboat slightly smaller than a "Sunfish". I've never had it on the kind of voyage you describe, but in my poet's imagination, you have stirred my dreams.
Thank you Margie and take care - Dave

I can see how you are fond of seas and adventures. Nothing like being courageous in setting off on journeys. It is taxing on the body but it is so much fun. I see how a book has inspired you tremendously to write another creative poem. Well. hi ho, hi ho...

Bipolar beer? Now that I recall from my days in the mental health field, the tone of this one is somewhat manic, jumping from place to place. Nothing wrong with that. Beware of the other end of the cycle, though.

You don't need to teach me about bipolar (((HUGS)))
The fact you took an idea from a book and mixed it into this beautiful metaphor, it was almost as if I was watching an adventure movie. This was a brilliant idea and not only that, but the words you used, the rhymes you always put in so well, didn't disappoint. And it truly feels as if I'm on a boat, or riding the waves. It's a great thing that not was this idea so good, but the execution was amazing, too. Thank you for sharing!

Good stuff. There another American credited with the first single handed circumnavigation of the globe - Joseph Slocum. Makes good reading.
