Etch Anew

Etch Anew

A Poem by Brad Baum

To live in an imprint,
Make soft indentations in the sand.
A fleeting memory, a dying ray
That bursts upon contact with the cold cement floor.

To die within a moment,
One that left before it began.
A cruel mistake to cut fate's strings.
Too bad you can't erase the ink.

To live within a dream,
Reality unbarred.
Free to roam the flowered graves,
Uncover all you wish to know.

But to die within a dream,
Reality unfolds.
To will the knife, to force the blade
A yearning your conscious forbade.

To live within the sea, the waves
Move with the ebb, the flow.
Remove the heart etched on the beach,
A blank slate on which to write anew.
