I thought I submitted this, but it does not appear on my writing list. It comes from experiences of working with kids in a state children's psychiatric hospital.

• She told you she was scarred by life’s betrayals

  She begged you to listen

  And not to say, “I understand.”

  Because you don’t.

  Because you can’t.

  She said sometimes she felt she was living in an abyss

  And there was no way out.

  Please don’t tell her, “I can identify.”

  You’ve not walked in her shoes.

  She told you everything you wanted to hear

  Except what she really felt

  Lest you begin to judge her

  Or whispered, “She’s not normal.”

   She knew you doubted her words

  But her dark eyes fooled you.

  “I’ll be fine. Let it go.”

  The expert of self-deception

  You spotted her skipping down a road

  Filled with tomorrows and days ahead

  But, years of impulsivity

  And distress wore her down

  Paralyzed under the comforter

  Too many times she sought advice

  “But they all read from “scripts”.

  Maybe it’s ‘cause she didn’t hear

   What she wanted to hear.

  She made a friend, recovering

  From abusive relationships

  Her own hell, but decided,

  “I will heal, and bring others with me.”

  One step forward

  Two steps back.

  Till forward won the race.

  Real friends, rooted for her as she “passed go”

  And collected the rewards well earned

  Of education, a healthy future and

  People who really cared

  Small steps pulled her down

  Small steps will bring her up.

  Trust and love will sustain her.
