Sometimes I Feel Like a Pencil-less Idiot

Sometimes I Feel Like a Pencil-less Idiot

A Poem by Becca Bishop
"

I know I do. How about you?

"

Sometimes I feel like a pencil-less idiot

Sometimes I feel like a wordless page

Sometimes I feel like an adventurer

Without an adventure.

Sometimes I feel like metaphors just don’t get the point across

Sometimes I feel like a pencil-less idiot,

Begging for someone to lend me something,

Anything.

Give me your ideas, give me your help.

Give me a pencil for goodness’ sake.

Sometimes I feel like a pencil-less idiot.

With words on my tongue that refuse to come out

Maybe curled up somewhere in the pencil I don’t have

Waiting for me to unlock them

If only I knew how.

Sometimes I feel like a writer who can’t write.

A dancer who can’t dance.

A me who isn’t me.

Sometimes I feel like something’s missing,

A vital part of life

Something I need

There are pencils around me. Pens, too.

Markers. Colored pencils. A piece of chalk.

Heck, even the two-year-old has a pencil.

Where’s mine?

Sometimes I sit there, waiting for the pencil

As if it could get up and walk to me

From the place I left it in.

I know where I left it.

Long ago. Far away.

Childhood, some would call it.

Amid the lollipop trees and

Castles and dragons of my youth.

When pencils were plentiful and sharp.

Maybe it rolled away.

Maybe someone picked it up

Someone who needed it for a moment.

Maybe it’ll come back one day,

Someday.

Maybe I’ll find a new one

A new pencil.

An extension of me

Something to lean on when life gets dull and blurs together,

When the days get longer

And I find myself becoming too much

Like everyone else.

Maybe when it comes back it will have new stories

New adventures to tell.

Whatever. Whenever.

I’ll wait.

And wait.

And when it returns life will go on

And I’ll finally be able to finish my Statistics homework.

If you haven't guessed, I think the pencil I'm talking about in this poem is my imagination. Sometimes I feel like I've lost the spark of imagination that helps me write and, to be honest, it scares the phooey out of me. Maybe this awkward rambling about pencils and such will entice my imagination to come back. Even better, maybe it will get me sent to an insane asylum.

Becca, as I can, I am reviewing your work and, as always, come across that part of you that is nothing less than delightful. No one, NO ONE could describe writer's block better than this. I have never experienced it but you more than perfectly explained it to me. Thanks for that nd many thanks for this fine work.

Well, I've heard tell there's this here peddler woman over in the next county. She walks up and down the here-and-there, pulling this little cart full of "stuff." She's really sweet and friendly and one day she sold me this bottle of Flume Oil. She said it was good for most anything but said if I oiled a wooden spoon and hung it over my bed it would cause Imaginnariums to grow around my bed at night while I slept. She said the funny thing is that people only seem to be able to smell them in their dreams; but once they do then when they wake up they seem to be able to find things. Things that they never even thought should find... like pencils, words, poems, stories and other cool stuff. I think she belongs to a guild or something; sort of like the FFA or the PPA. I'll bet there's one where you live. :o)

P.S. You gets a "Smiley Read" sticky star for this one! :D

Becca, I've read poems on writer's block before but this one is quirky as only you can make it, I've never really tried writing anything about writer's block myself but you have done better than I ever can. That desperation I feel when no inspiration swirls around in my head, you have described it in the most fun way possible and I can't help but think "I wish my writer's block was like this, where I could write something that reads like this"...damn this is awesome!!

And yet among all the babble there is a thin strand of meaning. Very humorous, and more or less awesome!
