Old Man and the Bramin

Old Man and the Bramin

A Story by LE Berry
"

A tale of the real sacred cow

"

He kept the great grey-white Bramin outside his shelter, a tiny space he knew was his home of now. Many said it was a

place of poverty and want, and on one point he did agree. His definition of wanting involved that of the spirit, something

often missed because of physical need. He would feed the Bramin while he went hungry, becoming thin in body but

nourished in spirit. Children would come to touch the gentle nose of Bramin, the old man smiling as he calmly

accepted the caring warmth of a human hand.

A time came when extreme difficulty fell upon his village, too many people being the cause. Children cried for food

their parents couldn't provide, and they looked at the Bramin in a different way. In their angry frustration they came to the

old man saying, "this cattle can feed our children! We will take it and butcher it to see our children's suffering end!"

The old man stood on shaky legs before the Bramin and said, "you can butcher this Bramin and your children may eat

for a day, but in the next they will be hungry again."  He looked at them all in spirit and will, "if you leave this Bramin in

peace, he will remain a gentle space for your children far beyond tomorrow and today..."

Makes no sense. People don't eat grass. Why would he give his food instead of supplying hay or fresh grass?

Also, what good does having a pet do when the children are starving? The answer is to breed that Bramin, and like others of its kind, it will eat what people can't and produce nourishment for people from it.

I think the problem is that you're slanting the situation, and people's actions, to produce the moral you want. I'm also guessing that you don't have children. As a father, weighing the benefit of giving my child a meal that will help their growth, health, and more, or keep an animal that they can pet, now and then, my answer is to eat the animal and supply the village with a cat for a pet. Smells better, nicer to pet, and catches mice. Win/win
