Alone

Alone is how I spend my nights

surrounded by darkness

lost in my thoughts

adrift in a bleak sea

reaching, clawing, praying

desperately needing rescue

breathing is shallow

waves of despair trying to overcome

i have but a simple raft

and there's no shore in sight

there's no rescue on the horizon

dark clouds are overhead

lightning, thunder, the wind howling

this ocean and I are at war

and this water around me will soon overtake me

there is no light in the dark

yet still i tread this water

there is no choice

survival my only goal

in this endless world of water

i see no hope

my arms tire

i have only one paddle

yet on i must go, alone

through it all, i will survive

because this loneliness, this despair

will not claim me
