Nothing I Care to Lose

Nothing I Care to Lose

A Poem by Brandon Mathis

I won’t save you

For another day of this abuse

You make it hard to get through

Throw me out like this life that you use

You’re everything that I don’t care to lose

I can’t be broken

I will not give in

To everything you say to me

Taking the future I could have

Grabbing my throat to squeeze

Trying to make my eyes go black

And you think this is the end of me

I will fly

I will shine

I will fall to pieces

But I will be free

I did this all without you

You’re nothing that I care to lose

Give me a little push

Shut me out of your book

I write my own future

And it will be good

If you’re not sure

Take a good look

You’re draining from me

And I have not felt purer

This world you play like a toy

Shadows that see the light in your voice

Lies that can’t control the truth

You’re everything I am not

I’m everything you have got

When I was nothing to you

I was nothing that you cared to lose

Just like you

I won’t be there to help you through

Not bad. You have a nice determined sort of tone that works well with the content of the piece, but I think you could use more vivid imagery here and there - what you have is fine for a simple sort of declarative statement, but I think that in order to even things up you should be a bit more figurative in parts. Good work.
