Quiet Affair

Quiet Affair

A Poem by Acropolix

I left quietly;
my heart was already out the door,
but my hands,
my hands would not move away
from the sheets still warm with love;

the air lived
with a soft trace of vanilla smoke
drifting out the window
to the empty streets of June,
where first we met at random chance;

how one smile
would take from me the future
I had foreseen
like the cycle of the moon
turned darkness to light, and back again;

I left early,
my footsteps light on the carpet of roses;
the sound so different
in the halls empty of sound and soul;
empathy cannot explain this betrayal;

all fizzles out;
not in hatred follow the days,
not in woe,
not in any of our earthly feelings;
simply close the door to your treason.
