Ugly Me, Pretty Me

Ugly Me, Pretty Me

A Poem by Brandii Watts
"

This poem features a young woman who uses makeup to get ready because she is scared and ashamed of her bare, natural face.

"
I look in the mirror
Red face, scars
I wouldn't want to be her
So here we are
I grab a tube and brush
Slide it around
Be careful not to dab too much
Or become a clown
My face is clean and smooth
But alas
Her eyes are tiny and blue
Let's fix this fast
I pack on the colors
Eyes are bright
I can make a perfect wing
With lots of height
I fill in the brows now
Here they come
I feel so much prettier
But I'm not done
She's still not good enough
The mirror shows
Just grab some bronzer to buff
And give a glow
I put blush on my cheeks
Line the lips
A perfect color I seek
And pink is hip
Is she presentable?
For the world?
The image looks quite pleasing
From rock to pearl
I would say that I'm fine
I can leave
The girl inside the mirror
Is proud of me
She's no longer ugly
Relief met
But then suddenly I see
Her eyes are wet
I know just how she feels
How insecure
But we'll dry our eyes and smile
And we won't tell the world
