The Friends In My Head

The Friends In My Head

A Poem by Brian M. Peeples

I write with the many voices

of all those that came before me.

And I write bout my choices in life,

to where those decisions have left me.

They are all walking by my side,

all the voices telling me what to do.

But they only come when I’m lost,

and they help me when I’m feeling blue.

They’re my only friends, I’d say.

The only ones that show me the way.

Though, all my friends are dead,

and these are just the friends in my head.

They sometimes feel like they’re real,

but I know they’re not, I know the deal.

Walking voices with similar thoughts,

seeking the same things I once sought.

But that’s all they are, they’re dead.

Just the friends inside my head

that like to make their words known.

And just like me, they don’t like to be alone.

That’s why I now follow my heart,

and find myself knee-deep in lots of art.

And as my friends would say, that’s a start.
