Head-on

Head-on

A Poem by Chris Mullen

Horns.

Screech.

Crunch.

Shatter.

Screaming.

Gasoline.

Smoke.

Ringing.

Confusion.

Bleeding.

Restrained.

Flames.

Panic.

Coughing.

Darkness.

Yelling.

Sirens.

Confusion.

Spinning.

Pinned.

Sick.

Fading.

Darkness.

Grinding.

Hands.

Extraction.

Agony.

Lights.

Sick.

Spinning.

Darkness..

Yelling.

Numbness.

Silence.

A unique offering, this one. Using only single words like brief, successive verses, the poet has managed to put us in the midst of a terrible car crash, as experienced by one of the drivers. By just following the words our imaginations are prodded to reproduce the scene. We can hear the sounds, smell the gasoline. The last word is quite ominous, leaving us wondering whether unconsciousness or death has occurred. If you can't
feel what's happening as you read this one, you're not paying attention. Excellent work.
