The Day The One Night Stands Just Had To Stop

The Day The One Night Stands Just Had To Stop

A Poem by Carlton Carr

The day
the one night stands
just had to stop
I read the stats of death
and thought about
how life had flopped

I felt the stranger’s hands
and the stranger confessions
falling from my lips
with the sips from the cup
that had been passed
from unknown lips to lips

Somewhere we had tripped
or been tricked
but for those of us
who now are sick
it’s a communion
that we had poured
and never meant to pass

If I lit a candle
to our past
I’d light it praying
that your silken hair
and imperfect body
had never passed
from me

I’d cast a spell
upon a night
that was so pure
we’d fight eternity
to keep our hold

We were so bold
that when the rosary was said
and the strand broken
I scrambled for the scattered beads
and clutched onto your hands
