The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden

A Poem by Carlton Carr
"

Any 12 step program friends out there? This was written in the honeymoon period of my recovery and, almost 8 years later, I stll feel the same about this journey.

"
Welcome to the secret garden
wherein lies a feast of dreams
search to find your truth uncovered
strive to end your wayward schemes

Meet the child who lives within you
born in innocence, flawed in sin
find the unspoiled hope inside you
let the healing pilgrimage begin

Be warned, the joker comes to charm you
with empty promises he’ll harm you
beware his faithless luck befall you
and breed a famine of the soul within

There are angels in the thorns
and vipers in the flowers rosy hue
but the pathways lead to treasures
at journeys end you’ll find the real you

I have a dear friend going through this right now. My own recovery was harder, it involved cultural and spiritual and physical isolation induced by the needs of the workplace. I almost did not make it back out again. I did not realize at the time it was something you could either talk or write about. Now I know better- shame is an even greater binding force than the problems that sent you seeking. How blessed a gift is it to find the real person at the end, gazing back from a mirror? How even more blessed the day you realize that you actually like the person looking back?
