Gratitude

Gratitude

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

A breakthrough, what those moments can do for you.

"
So unexpected through the maze
and from the confines of her bed,
at last a pathway clears the haze.
Was it something that I said,
that made her stretch to touch my hand?

Her head leaned forward, not a word,
I heard her laughter as it broke.
Through all the smoke that fogs her mind,
the unkind battles she has fought.
I never thought once more I'd see,
my Mother's eyes smile back at me.

This is so beautiful. I can see and understand it clearly. It hit home on a personal level too as I remember my own mother's days of rare lucidity when she could find her way through the fog. It's like watching a flower bloom right in front of your eyes. So touching. F.

Such a moving write Chris. (I never thought once more I'd see, my Mother's eyes smile back at me.) I remember the day I went to visit my Mother in the nursing home and she didn't know who I was. That was THE worst day of my life. I'm sorry you had to experience some of these same things with your Mom. ~Sharon

I was my mother's caregiver and I was grateful that I could be. Like a woman with a newborn I never left her side. Moments most dear to me and I see them here in your poem.

A soft heartfelt ode to your mom Chris... I know you took her death very hard and I'm very sympathetic; It's difficult to see someone suffer ( my mom too).... at the same time, we want peace and comfort for them, but still painful to let go....I like the "the pathway clears the haze" she was able to touch reach out with a laugh, how loving and emotional is that. Tears to my eyes.
Stay strong dear Chris.
Truly, B

Wow this is touching, one of my friends is losing her mom to Alzheimer's, and some days this is all she wants...just to see her mother smile as she recognizes her daughter one last time...

This is a beautiful poem. It's great when these times come when our mothers' memories are clear. I worry all the time, wondering when my mom won't have a clear memory. I try to enjoy my time with her to the fullest. I really enjoyed this read!
