In Spirit

In Spirit

A Poem by Chris Shaw

We are in time a mote of dust,
a pin prick in an ocean sky.
While some may catch the comet's flare,
each one of us is doomed to die.
What causes some to burn so bright
when most live out their lives in night?

I'd like to dance above the clouds,
do cartwheels over mountains high.
Chase rainbows to the valley's end
and grow two wings so I might fly.
These things I may not do on earth,
but will in spirit with re-birth.

Beautifully captured thought Chris, which leads me to wonder if we remove religion and personal beliefs from the equation for a moment, leads to the wonder that seems so primal and ingrained into our dna, of why we all have the feeling of being finally free of bodily form so intense, that it leads to another thought of this "life" being an audition for whatever it is I feel and you felt strongly enough t pen these words.
The thought does seem to lead us somewhere beyond faith and into realms unspoken, felt and known.
I wonder why we wonder such wonders, beneath a starless night sky where even the atmosphere of our own planet can cover these night jewels, how we still sense them there, waiting for us to unchain ourselves from our gravity obeying shells and see and be them without the need for eyes.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to counting twinkles before that big twinkle returns (the sun) ☀️😊☀️

Whether or not we believe in re-birth, its doesn't matter as this poem is so true to many of us. It seems that we want to do and dream of joyful things before we die. You paint a fabulous write of these dreams many of us have....flying in the air with giant wings, climbing over mountains, chasing rainbows, all of which are fanciful, and even if we don't get to do them while on earth, we may, in "re-birth"
Well done Chris!
Best always, Betty

This so excellent Chris - your formal control over the subject - the unforced structure and rhyme scheme - so difficult to rhyme well these days with everyone writing free verse and spoken word material - this flows along very nicely, to an exceptional and meaningful conclusion.

yes! takes guts to take to flight doesn't it!? You creat a sharp contrast between V1 &2 .. lifts the joy in V2 well over that mountain .. I have flying dreams now and again .. my favorites! getting air born takes different shapes but always there is the flying .. ohhhhhhhhhhhh the flying. :)))) pity we see death as a doom ... I don't believe it for a minute .. we have the chance to kiss the sky as Hendrix put it .. without the psychedelic's please ;] dawn will be coming in a couple hours or so, here in the Ozarks ... mmmmmmmmm I anticipate a smooth take off

Hello, Christine! :)
This is a lovely rhyme.
"a pin prick in an ocean sky." - I like that, how you mix your metaphors.
Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful images here. Indeed, we are all small compared to the enormity of the world, but I believe we all can burn bright in the here and now. Perhaps we will be given the opportunity to do those cartwheels after we die, but I am not making bets. I will do them now! Your words are lyrical, Chris....one of the best from you. Lydi**

What a wondrous dream. Notice I ignore your first phrase. It's so true and so sad. To be able to dance among the clouds and to do cartwheels on mountains and chase rainbows. What a delight it would be. Thank you Chris for this fantasy.
Take care - Dave

You always write such beautiful, intricate, and breathtaking pieces. So spiritual and they always hit home. I can tell this was written from the depths of your soul and you put it on this website with the most beautiful words. This is one of my favorite pieces I've read and it truly feels as if you're floating on the words.
