Absent Stars

Absent Stars

A Poem by Chris Shaw

And who has swept the stars away
not one remains in sight?
Too eager with their bristle brush
they've cleaned the sky at night.
So all those clustered gems I love
which give me peace of mind,
are huddled in an unknown place
that torchlight can not find.

A canvas stretches end to end
devoid of silver light.
The moon has left, those sparklers gone
will no one hear my plight?
If I should ask or make a wish
or plead for compromise,
will someone spare two tiny stars
and place them in my eyes?

Taken literally, I too miss the stars. I remember when young going to the mountains with no outside light and seeing so many stars, now all gone due to light pollution. But figuratively, I feel that the present has taken the stars from our eyes with its form of light pollution. Nicely done Chris.

Without doubt you must continue writing Chris. Like me, once you start you can't stop!
Lovely. And rooted in astrophysical truths. Because every single thing in the observable universe is in motion, in the extremely distant future every single planet, star, moon, etc.. will be so far away from each other that not even light is fast enough to close the distance. Our night sky will be forever completely devoid of starlight and we really will be alone in a universe about to die from what is called a "heat death". Of course, this is literally many many trillions of years away (googlplex) so nothing we know of today will be around to see it happen. Even the Milky Way galaxy would have collided into many others forming something completely different by then... probably even certain physical laws of the universe will have changed by then.

Living under a night sky dimmed by city lights,
I can feel your longing.
Time away gives a chance to see the beauty,
and the memory of the stars wait hiding behind your eyes.

The phrasing flows with rhythm and rhymes nicely. You might even say it twinkles! I enjoyed this!

Hello Mark. Thanks for checking this one out. I appreciate your visit.

Chris
Snap! I was just thinking along similar lines last night, except a little further north it looked like someone stole the sky and replaced it with a very low hanging,, black and angry supercloud, that was just waiting to burst.
Was it only august it was still light at 10pm? Its mot fair. No twinkles to watch, not even Mr Moon could barge his way through.:)
Roll on spring. :)
Beautifully written Chris, it sounded to me your words were spoken in a soft, pleading sigh.

Sigh :)
