Love's Legacy

Love's Legacy

A Poem by Christine Anne Shaw

How fleeting is the comet's flare
which trails ablaze through dark night sky?
How swiftly moves our time on earth
before we part with sad goodbyes?
And in-between, what does it mean?
It all concerns the seeds we sow.
For love and love alone ensures
the worth of all we choose to grow.

The really wise understand how to live on this earth. If life could be described in just a word, it would be fleeting and the need of every human is nothing but love. The message in the poem is profound and urgent and is so well enhanced by the great rhyming.

The theme of your poem is a "hobby horse" of mine. It's not only the fantasy of poets that love is the greatest force there is, but an actual reality.
The comet, its trail, and the seeds are all great metaphors. The tone of the poem is also one of its strengths - in my opinion. The quiet recognition of the brevity of life, and its acceptance are no small feats. However, we won't really disappear without a trace if we plant and grow with love.

I love how your imagery suggest: "what comes around, goes around" (an oft-used saying here to say what you sow is what you reap). The comet, infrequent as it may be, is cyclical, so this image reminds me of how the same-ole same-old will circle back around if we don't change our orbit (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I really liked this one for its splendid rhyming and deep philosophy. Yes, our time, even that of the most ancient of us, is like the brief flare of a shooting star in the night. And love, especially at its highest level, is the thing that makes it all worth it. This one might have been written by one of the Elizabethan poets.

Chris, you put so much in so little. You are so, so right, we are here for only a speck of time. If it weren't for love why should we even bother? Love is the key, it opens all the locks.

Life passes us by so quickly like the comet's flare that we must live our lives to the best we can while we're alive. In between life and death, we must learn to cherish what we have and to love to the fullest.
Well done Chris. Truly Yours, B

Chris, this is absolutely fantastic! My favorite of all of your poems. It is so true. The calendar pages turn all too quickly and the close relationships we form...the caring and the loving....that's what counts in the end. A beautiful sentiment and a great poem. Lydi**
