Did You Ever?

Did You Ever?

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

Scientific facts here folks.

"
Did you ever contemplate
that female dragonflies
can seemingly lie?
Determined to be mistress
of their own fate,
studies have discovered
that ladies of the species
will feign death
rather than succumb to
the advances of rampant mates.
Forgive me for smiling
because it tickles me to find
such punishing plans put in place,
talk about anything
for a bit of peace.
"A not tonight darling
I've got a headache
I can't face it", is pretty tame
when you compare it
to the games those winged divas play.
Got to hand it to them
they ain't flitting about with any nonsense
unless they are in the mood
and feel broody.
A simple "Go away" out of the question.
They'd rather fake their own demise,
drastic measures to avoid
one of life's little pleasures.

Oh wow...I did not know this. It seems the perfect affect. Its why I enjoy the company or women. Not in that way, but because of the way that history and patriarchal hierarchy have played out. I can't imaging the s**t and minutia that women have to deal with. That being said, I applaud this fact finding mission and have to say, I would play dead as well.

Ah yes, I've read about it and it made me laugh even then and now too! Seems we (female) humans have much to learn from those mightly dragonfly ladies hahah ;P
It was refreshing to see someone covered this topic in poetry form. Nice one, Christine :))

We share the same sense of humour Dr Y. We can indeed learn from lady dragonflies. Thank you.
Delightful, humorous, cleverly constructed. I absolutely love dragonflies, and I had never heard of this dramatic male diversion. I look forward to reading more of your writing.

Thank you Larq. Welcome to my page. Delighted to see you here.

Never thought the morphology of a dragonfly can be so telling. Also polemical. Without being didactic.

You live and learn. Thanks for checking this one out Aurora.
i think some women may be pushed to almost do this very same thing...some males just don't understand the word "no."
or hey, i'm just not interested.
and then the praying mantis...after their lovemaking, the female kills the male.
harsh tactics all the way around.

Welcome :)
Seems such ladies don’t always find “life’s little pleasures” in the company of men. Though feigning death is less humiliating than what a girl told me in high school when I called to ask her on a date. “I’m sorry, Robert, I’m washing my hair tonight,” she said matter of factly. I think my pride died on the line that night.

This poem made me smile, Chris. Nature reminds me often females are the superior sex.
