Art From The Heart

Art From The Heart

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

Thanks for the inspiration Lorry, who never does serious :)

"
it is said that to paint
like Pollock or Picasso
you must study art for years
learn every rule in the book
then break them

i have never been a lover
of either and Pollock for sure
sounds very much like
that slang word
pillock to me

not my cup of tea at all
small children have great sense
of colour, plenty of imagination
given paper and a brush
neither do they take an age
to produce a masterpiece

prolific, always in a rush
to please teacher
they also know how to count
understanding that people
have two eyes, not three
i like that simplicity

i have a portrait of me
in a triangle dress, hair distressed
my knees with tennis ball bounce
one breast the size of a pea
the other a jam doughnut

six fingers resemble daggers
what swagger have i
neatly upon my feet
Cuban heels complete
this fine picture

are you beginning to see
where i'm coming from?
this poem of course
very much tongue in cheek
and penned in fun

Fun indeed! This is a good-natured poke at masters of distortion and naivety. Not that I mind what they get up to, but the link to children's ways of expressing themselves is nicely presented. I have a grandchild that turns every living creature into some sort of pirate! When we took him to a bird sanctuary and asked him to draw what he had seen, all the birds were turned into pirates!

Sometimes, of course, the child is father of the man - and we can learn much from an unsophisticated view of the world. Thanks for entertaining us so well.

I believe the best artists in any genre are ones that do it without taking classes and learning from a teacher. Then you are being molded on how to be.
I love your witty attitude in this poem.

Thanks kescha for checking in and reading. Appreciated.

Blue trees, green dogs and not a rule book left intact. Its us that are weird. It is us that call 10am teatime and not playtime. We should all be jumping in rain puddles instead of pretending we grew up. We didn't, we got older, some wiser, but not for me.
And don't you dare judge me until you have tried a sugar puffs sandwich 😀
Ps... Go round to your friends and ask if they are coming out to play. They'll look at you like you're an alien.
Ps... Don't forget your skipping ropes 😀

Fun indeed. I thought the portrait you were describing may have been one done by a child and one cherished by a loving parent.

Love the word play and flowing narrative in this saritirical and witty piece Chris. There is though lots of truth in what you say in jest!

Art , like writing, sometimes takes itself far too seriously. Too much pretension.
Years ago the Government of Canada purchased a painting called 'Voice of Fire'...cost 2 million dollars at the time...three vertical stripes...2 blue...one red...about 20 ft. high. It's in the National Gallery in Ottawa.
I would imagine the artist is still laughing.

A good poem, Chris.
