Harbour Nights

Harbour Nights

A Poem by Chris Shaw

At dawn the sky brewed dismal grey,
relentless rain moved in to stay,
all day the heavens wept with grief.

From terraced tiers my eyes glance down
through window glass I view this town
by night festooned in fairy lights.

Returning home are fishing boats,
while anchored craft are now afloat,
high tide within old harbour walls.

All Brixham's jewels are on display,
in witching hours a grand array,
this inner basin sparkles bright.

Without a doubt, at dark this place
brings forth a smile upon my face
out come the ghosts of ages past.

Brixham is certainly a busy fishing village - though I guess less busy that it once was. I used to live further east along the Devon coast and the fishing boats were registered in Brixham. I have a feeling that the place probably looks better at night than in the cold light of a grey day - and you capture the magic of the dark hours in this pleasingly reflecting poem.

another to add to your collection of the "harbor" ... i particularly like the form you chose ... it kind of lifts me with first two lines and then puts a landing point in the third .. i think you create a very vivid scene and mood ..our last several days and nights have been quite grey and rainy ... with slight reprieve of sunlight ... but its the nights that the grey seems most vivid ... few stars to light the sky if any ... but oh those https://youtu.be/EvYnA8uTJD8 :) romance is flowing, Chris ... right here at the Cafe'

It is a place which makes me feel most content. Thank you Linda Marie.

You paint a seaside scene better than anyone at the cafe. Love how this one lilts along with the sensation of anticipation. Despite the dreary aspects of a place, clearly the narrator loves every little well-depicted detail! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Wow!...............................What a graphic and clearly portrayed picture of the coast as we drink in the romance that is hidden in it's grief.
