A Solitary Wayward Leaf

A Solitary Wayward Leaf

A Poem by Christine Anne Shaw

A leaf in happy morning mood
kept active by a wilful gust
that saw it cartwheel quick, quick, slow.,
which knocked the winter rust off me.
My toes felt lifted, so inspired
I gathered pace and took a chance.
I chased it down a country lane
to join it in its crazy dance.

i love this...the willingness to run with abandon in life...to take risks. the wind being a whim...
and i found it interesting that in reading the first few lines i not only envisioned, but hoped for the ending...that the speaker would be dancing with the leaf...
what great partners they make.

For the sake of simplicity I would get rid of the 'a' from the third and second to last line and the 'it' from the last line.
to read....
"I gathered pace and took chance.
I chased it down country lane
to join in its crazy dance."

This is very good work regardless.

Yes, winter does often get us into a condition like rust. It's like we are corroded by inaction, cold and gray skies. Sometimes something unexpected can serve to jolt us out of that freeze. If it's just a little, windswept leaf, so what? It worked.

I liked the light-heartedness of this poem; it flows well and the reader gets the point quickly. I can see the leaf skipping down the lane and a person, perhaps a child, running after it. Nice write!

Of course, you too!
Chris, I needed this poem this morning. Winter has grinded me down, and just thinking of that image lifted my spirit. The sun's up and I'll look for that fallen leaf doing cartwheels down the road.

This poem is a good example how nature offers a different and often refreshing perspective. The goodness of life is truly found in the simple things, especially in nature.

Thank you for those wishes. Much appreciated.
Reminded me of the "plastic bag in the wind" scene from American beauty. It's fascinating how our minds can find beauty even in the slightest, most mundane things when we pay close attention.
When we are younger, the world is much brighter, and anything can be considered magic.
But as we age, we begin taking the ordinary things for granted, and our visions dampen, but there are always moments that awaken the little kids within us, compelling us to throw caution to the winds, and chase down leaves with reckless abandon.

I remember a few times as a kid when I had chased a runaway leaf, at other times a rabbit on the loose in a garden. This is really good. The feeling comes through.
