Who Were We Kidding

Who Were We Kidding

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(Girls on holiday)

"
all those holidays ago
when we hired a convertible
to get us round the island
red it was, red for danger
strangers were we to etiquette
on foreign roads
so when we approached
crossroads our ignorance showed
splendidly in primary colour
as the local men tooted
and honked horns noisily
we just tooted back tenfold
not realising it was their way
of saying, we got here first
deploy your brakes don't be dumb

The last part cracked me up haha. These little little silly yet funny incidents are like treasure to enjoy life. It feels like I visualized a hilarious movie scene while reading the piece. I can predict the later part where the girls are looking at each other and laughing at the situation.

Hot car full of cheerful girls.
A young man's sweetest fantasy!
If only they would swing around...

Ah, those heady days of freedom... Sigh.
The guys engines roar, as the girls inspire Thelma and Louise, yet as they pass you, all that can be heard is orchestrated giggles that leave their perfume in the wind.
I never did catch up to any of them. I had a knack of making them choose accelerator over breaks, every time 😀
