Moods

Moods

A Poem by Chris Shaw

no doubt when red kites near home
alert me to their imposing presence

when their squeaky shrill whistles
resound through chilled country air

as they circle overhead in search of
juicy earthworms or dead prey

when i pine for Brixham harbour
as frost clings to the last of leaves

and thoughts scatter to the wind to
that raucous rattle of metal masts

from pristine yachts in neat rows
that dance to wild gusts wailing

to pings of rigging in varied keys
strange tones, medleys of madness

a cacophony of jarring sound from
marina's pontoons that ring in ears

a percussion of discord of all that
reminds me of ocean's fickle nature

A wonderful poem about the sea and her beauty. Dear Chris, I love the sea too. Life seem more easy with the sea near. I enjoyed the description and you made me wish for a sea-day. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry. I did like.

wonderfully imaged filled as the moods of a human can be: perceptions, discovering, inclination, reasoning. An although moods are an attitude or spirit of pretense you made it substance-nectar; you brought it to life. beautifully written/ dana

I love the way your poem starts in one mood & meanders thru several other moods, just the way we do when we hear a bird call out in nature, then we begin to notice more & more, as if the bird call directed our attention to all the possibilities. You pack all your observations with details that tickle the senses (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

There is something to sitting near a pier on a windy day and listening to masts clanging together. Something like nautical wind chimes ... a peaceful background noise that reminds us there is still a bit of teeth to the wind.

Lovely description Chris.

You're, obviously, quite familiar with the ocean and its watercraft.
Recreate both, most impressively.
Cannot tell you how thoroughly I enjoyed this lovely poetic overview.
Many thanks, poetess!

dearest Chris... when the Virus first appeared..
we had thunder and lightening night after night.
The seagulls were aware of our plight.
Now the skies are usually Moody with little sunshine...
just enough to pray for Grace. We visit Colonial Beach
on the Potomac and walk the sands of time where Alexandria Graham Bell 🔔 had his Summer Home. tenderly, Pat

I love this poem for the sheer lovely contradiction that I read in your words, dear Chris. The raucous rattle of metal masts, wild gusts wailing, a cacophony of jarring sound, a percussion of discord and yet! How we love and adore the ocean with all its chaos and fickle nature! It's hypnotic, its wild and yet its so so soothing on our souls. For these very reasons, I adore this poem, my friend.
