Shades Of Bland

Shades Of Bland

A Poem by Chris Shaw

smokey grey bleeds into a grim day
far away a horizon line defined
by a deeper shade of sea

no silver ribbons gleam on breakers
not a streak of colour in sight
of sea water's wall

sail boats skim surface as mist
rolls in on a sudden whim, in ghostly
eerie trails

encroaching with its flimsy flying
wedding veils, eyes ever searching
pockets form, swirling twirling

in she glides at pace as though in a
race, no ferries will chase today's
white crested waves

insipid neutral shades of dull
hulls and sterns of boats obscured
by hazy creep

yet there's comfort in grey moments
confined to slate grey dreams
claustrophobia wrapped in a wool

Grey was my adolescent self's colour of choice. It was comforting to me beyond the imagination of those that saw drabness and gloom, on on end of the spectrum, and sartorial dignity on the other. But the real revelation is that is also brought on a familiar claustrophobia. Quite a profound line of thinking along the lines of this poem. Thanks for sharing, Chris.

I like the way you choose words. You are like a jeweller, picking the right trinkets to make a beautiful necklace. For you, there are more to words. You love the way they feel, sound and taste.

Your words flow effortlessly like the water currents at sea. The motions of this poem reminds me of the poetry of, Goerge Mackay Brown. He had a love for the roll and rock of water upon waves.

I completely enjoyed this piece. This is poetry so beautifully expressed. Chris, your craftsmanship is simply superb!

You are so much welcome, Chris.
Those grey days are somewhat like sad songs. But we often love to hear them.

Thank you Tim. All part of the overall picture. Have a great day.

I am relating this to autumn's grey days which I actually find comforting
Not yet the cold harsh winds of winter's weather, no more worries about excess heat, and forest fire worries and even the grey days have leaves of many colors
Happy dreams

Thank you Dave. Grey is good in my book too.

You describe the in between so elegantly. So many times we describe the darkness or the light. Here I find myself inspired to take joy in the moments where things are just simply there. I love your descriptive choices in words. You paint a vivid picture of gray. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes to you.

Love this stanza for the grey moments in which we live, cause we all live in that period now days. Every second that passes us by is a grey moment.
Claustrophobia wrapped in wool, could either be referred to be soft or hard in this world.

This is amazing Chris...

I love the grey days. Sunny days are cool but i prefer the overcast moody ones. A fireplace and a drink. A pen among other things to entertain ones self. A big window and waves crashing. Perfect. Nice work.

dear Chris... we spent a lot of time by the Ocean when we visited family in Delaware...
the mist and fog ... the sunny warm days...
Once, when we crossed Bay Bridge from Maryland, there was lightening from both sides... the three miles across ..It was a Miracle to not be hit... Grey and foggy stormy days are foreboding. You have described the melancholy
of the mighty movements of the Waves. gently, Pat
