Ad Infinitum

Ad Infinitum

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(a love poem)

"
ours is not the sorrow of a sad
decaying rose whose tomorrows
are lost in stubborn shadow

we are not those tinctured petals
parted from a scented heart that
litters crazy paving on garden paths

we are the last of love's blooms
attached to green sepals capturing
evening's sunlight before it falls

trellised to an old stone wall
we may be past our prime though
you are you and always you are mine

i just read Pryde's poem "Shift to Blue" ..and then here for another lesson in flowers .. i love it .. the tone in this is rich with the aging ... love that old stone wall .. and your poems anthem ... we may have some years behind us but our love is love more solidly built than petals that are first to fade and fall... i find that closing line warm and comforting .. thanks for sharing these places in the hearts and minds of couples who have weathered some storms only to become better .. more selfless .. and enriched ..

A mature romantic write.....perhaps we are the last of love's blooms, but we are fortunate to still have partners. The images in your poem are so lovely, Chris. "green sepals capturing evening's sunlight before it falls" heavy sigh....that is romance! Beautifully written. Lydi**

I have suffered through enough fruitless infatuations to appreciate what love truly is. Love is having someone overlook your idiosyncrasies and bad days ... to accept that you may not always show a presentable face to the world ... and still give you a gentle peek on the cheek for no reason.
Love is hanging from that trellis hand in hand waiting on the next adventure.

Good one Chris

Love your thoughts here Ted. Many thanks for checking in. All the best.

This is a beautiful poem of love and devotion. Beautiful and timeless as roses will always be beautiful. I'm glad you worked it out. I think it's always better to work it out in a marriage, if you can. I hope that it is worth it.

Yes, it is a love poem, indeed. Not one of those can't live without you, baby/you done me wrong offerings, but a memoir of patient love that has stood the test of years. Trellised roses veer apart at times, but they always come back and stay the path upward together. But that all were this way.

I agree dear Chris and you are welcome.
what a great love poem this is..."we are not those tinctured petals" and do we have a story to tell.
Imagine all the blooming, the fading, the re-blooming....past the prime or not...
a rose holds its beauty till its last breath. Metaphorically brilliant.

dearest Chris... your poem touches my heart as I walk through dreams that break my heart... the pieces can be gathered ... but they are weathered with each passing day. When Spring arrives... I will Rise each day with wilted 🥀 petals... but will rejoice in the day that God has made. Your poetry is embroidered with May flowers and Summer songs... tenderly, Pat
