Sundown and Wind Farms

Sundown and Wind Farms

A Poem by Chris Shaw

far from finding
wind farms an eyesore
they stay a fascination as
offshore turbines salute
a fast dimming sky

from Roan beach
carbon fibre blades rotate
as moderate winds
aid graceful clockwise
turning

row on row they stand
embracing air
as though a surgeon's knife
sliced through sky's heart
rip roaring red no sutures
as crimson clots appear

they spread it bleeds
it plasters heaven's highway
reflected in evening's dark
salty waters
skyscape slaughter

as golden sol
slips slowly beyond
horizon's black ribbon line
while hours pass on by
building clean energy

What a great image blended with such poetic words.
"as though a surgeon's knife
sliced through sky's heart
rip roaring red no sutures
as crimson clots appear"
Then the whole next stanza
"they spread it bleeds
it plasters heaven's highway
reflected in evening's dark
salty waters
skyscape slaughter"
Great lines Chris

Powerful work. The imagery and metaphor work very well.

I have seen a few wind and solar farms. I never thought of them as "eyesores" but rather, a usefully purposed bit of real estate. I do think the wind turbines are rather romantic while the fields of solar panels look like a slick, black ballroom floor, freshly waxed. I enjoyed the entirety; great descriptions and word usage throughout. F.

I really would have liked to be your 60th hit, but I couldn't wait any longer .. so 59th will have to suffice .. couldn't agree more though .. a near perfect capture in my most humble of opinions .. Neville

I too am fascinated by these turbines. They are ugly beasts and loud, bird killing factories. At night, at a distance, they are quiet sentinels bathing in red ominous light off the highway somewhere. In a certain setting they are wondrous machines. And they aren't ruining our air. And they don't require risky drilling. And they churn up the sky leaving a beautiful sunset.

Beautifully articulated in a way I didn't see. I've always found them to be slightly hypnotic. Driving by and drifting off. Great work Chris.
