If I Had Only

If I Had Only

A Poem by Cassie Weller
"

What if?

"

If I had met you days before her,
would your heart have turned to see?
Could I have held your love surrendered;
fallen for the likes of me?

If I had spoken feelings tender,
long before she had your ear,
could my words have pulled your heartstrings;
whispering, so your soul could hear?

If my eyes got your attention,
stolen glance in drowning gaze,
would the sight be enough to hold you;
shackling spirit in holy ways?

If my smile in admiration
met with yours in joyful greet,
would you have etched it in your memory;
locked away- secret to keep?

If paths had met at different crossroads,
if she had not yet captured flame,
would you have looked twice at our encounter
and spoken fondly of my name?

If God in mercy had but altered
time and distance at intersect,
would you have held me close and loved me?
If only we had ever met.
