New Years Resolution Revolution

New Years Resolution Revolution

A Poem by Carole

New Year’s Resolution Revolution

Though it’s true that change will always be a need

And perhaps there is always something we might heed

New Years Resolutions represent a near impossible task

Those things I promise to adhere to, rarely last

My best intentions frequently go awry

Leaving me with a guilty conscience as I see my list die

I strive and I strive with all that I’ve got

And then I look in the mirror & I’m reminded of what I’m not

I’ve derived a plan that has worked for me

Implementing it has been vital & key

I don’t have to struggle with guilt & shame

For I haven’t set myself up for disappointment & pain

Holding my resolutions quietly in my heart,

I pray for the strength and grace to do my part

I’m silently sustained a long the way

And change is born from day to day

I don’t need the prison of self defeat

I don’t need the feeling of getting beat

Who doesn’t want to win and succeed?

Who doesn’t want to be known for good deeds?

Why wait for the New Year to start a resolution?

Herein lies a faddist’s revolution

Don’t set yourself up again & again to fail

Let yourself out of that self-made prison and jail

Setting goals should be a regular thing

Not something we decide to do at a New Years fling

Aim at nothing and you’ll hit it again & again

Aim at something and it won’t be in vain

Pinpoint the change you’d like to make

Pray for the strength and help for goodness sake

Aim that bow and arrow with the bulls-eye in sight

Pull back the bow and let the arrow take flight

If you miss & sometimes you will

Don’t let yourself suffer with remorse and guilt

Pick up your arrow and try it again

Eventually, you are going to win

I’m leading a New Year’s revolution

Against the mentality of New Years resolutions

Good intentions sometimes need to be changed

Sometimes they simply need to be rearranged

This is wonderful. It is a Christmas Story unto itself. I love the flow and the feel of texture that maintains the speed ot the reading. Nothing in the work is untrue of all of us at the end of the year and that is what keeps the attention best of each reader. Your arrow hit the Bullseye dead on and the measure of the work is due high praise. Great job

what a great idea...all too true that sometimes people pin all their hopes on those little scribblings they put to paper on New Year's and then feel defeated when they fail. I do make some resolutions, I admit...but usually they are small and general enough that I can accomplish them at least in part. still...I do truly like this idea...setting your goals throughout the year and taking baby steps towards larger ones.

Awesome and Excellent in my book. I lvoed it. People need to know the truth and not feel guilty because they failed. The truth sets us free if we allow it.

Originally a saying used to encourage schoolchildren to do their homework, American educator Thomas H. Palmer (1782-1861) wrote in his 'Teacher's Manual': 'Tis a lesson you should heed, try, try again. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Thus the words of your composition echo the theme and sentiments of this maxim; when applied to New Year's resolution the poignancy is amplified successfully in verse.

Personally, I have never made a resolution of this type and subscribe to your idea, that if changes are needed, the sooner they begin, the better!

"Holding my resolutions quietly in my heart,

I pray for the strength and grace to do my part" I cut this line, to list as my favorite as I read, but to be honest the poem got really strong from here on. I liked the part before this, but after reading this line and those that followed, I kind of want a stronger beginning. Don't get me wrong. This is awesome as is. It just goes from good to great. Impressive prose.

This is awesome. My therapist taught me some tricks to that, too. I've also learned to go one at a time. One baby step leads to another. So, I try to set one or two small goals at a time and do my absolute best to work toward them and then I take it from there. That definitely makes it easier and I have more confidence in myself than when I have a huge goal that seems so out of reach. I don't give up so easily. One of my goals right now is to have a better, more positive attitude and I'm pretty proud of myself at how I've managed to have a better attitude lately than I ever have. :) It works! Thanks for sharing this with us.

My last New Years Resalution was to try and touch as many lives in a positive way. By reaching out to those in need. A gentle touch to souls that bleed. A simple smile along the way. Whatever I can to brighten The day. Each year since is a simple request. To find a way to do more and give my best. Yours is a true statement in many cases but I think I will stick to my yearly plan. Still yours is a great piece. Well written and moving.
