Whisper Eleutheria… Freedom…

As we come from the night

How Lily is the life of desire

In the summerlanders mythic kiss

Island of Greek Phraxos made whole

Channeled by Cerne Abbas stamps

Where men see the depth of objects

And Prospero sings, “I am no psychic.”

Story of Three Hearts drunk in flasks…

Here I stand in existential contemplation…

Story of Seidevarre shedding masks

And Prospero sighs, “A passion of the wick.”

Where women see object links complex

Channeled in Goya’s La Maja lamps

Island of the fragmented human soul

In Stanislavski’s Lysistrata mist

How Lily is the end of all fire

As we go into the night

Whisper Eleutheria… Freedom…

Author's Note

An owl on the moon
My poem is based on reflections of “The Magus,” by John Fowles, a book which came highly recommended by a dear friend. Above, the very first and last line correspond, and move toward the middle.

“The human race is unimportant. It is the self that must not be betrayed. Hitler didn’t betray himself. He did not. But millions of Germans did betray theirselves. That was the tragedy. Not that one man had the courage to be evil, but that millions had not the courage to be good.” ~ John Fowles, “The Magus”

Think this must be one of the most illumunating pieces of writing - prose or verse regarding The Magus. To actually read the book and understand it takes some doing, but then, to go on and write such a poem is quite extraordinary. Great use of ' .. Here I stand in existential contemplation'

Always a pleasure, Mr. Froman
I have never read this book, but I love the way you wove these words together, quite like an ingenious little tapestry. I adore the beginning as the end, I am usually not fond of this method unless it is very well employed and you pulled it off flawlessly, as a perfect dismount. You create a sense of wondering in the reader and effectively made me want to learn more of the story or possibly ready the book. Wondrous as always, Sir Craig :)

The Magus certainly sounds quite interesting. I love the picture with the piece.

"Here I stand in existential contemplation"

That line, I think, centers your whole piece and is a springboard for all of it.

I really like it. Flows beautifully and thoughtfully.

Sounds like a great book. I thought for sure you were transitioning into some other fantasy world. That would be wonderful, write more dragon stuff. ;}

That was brilliant my friend! Absolutely. I love that you added a quote from the book. It added to the power of this piece! Love it!
