A Poem by An owl on the moon

Thoughts that came to me after the Fort Hood shootings longing for peace

When I was a child,

it’s strange,

I know,

but no one ever died,

and the world

was yellow…

All the families

were happy…

and each sunrise

brought bright

Oh… I argued every

now and then

with my friends

but in minutes

it was all forgotten

and we were back

saving the world again

I didn’t hear

all the yelling

in my neighbor’s house

when darkness fell…

I didn’t know

that my friend’s father

shot his mother

than killed himself…

I didn’t realize

all the pain

I would feel

as day turned

to night

and my tattered

memories turned

deep gray…

Maybe I was blind

when I was a child…

Maybe I was a fool

to see only

happy faces

feel only

the warmth

of friendship

in the world

around me.

Or perhaps

maybe I

saw things

I simply can

no longer see…

Maybe each

new sunrise

really is enchanted

and somehow

we all need

to come back

across ten

scarlet skies…

Maybe there can

be a world

filled with peace…

I want to believe it…

When I was a child

it’s strange

I know…

No one ever died…

It is true what they say that ignorance is bliss... amazing what you realize when your innocence is first tainted by the world... things you see now from when you were young... that is why a kids can have an endless imagination because their is no pain of failure holding them back... great poem... very nostalgic.

Beautiful write on innocence. Dale said it best in his review below. I can be that kid. Universal.

I too can remember childhood being like that. The age of our innocents............................................poor bliss. I love this poem.
My favourite bit is:

When I was a child
it’s strange
I know…
No one ever died…

Sadly, reality hits us even harder!!!!!
I look forward to reading more of your work.

wow lovely cute poem, when we were a child world seemed different with less troubles to detangle, there was beauty even in innocence, and the truth that prevailed, childhood days are the happiest!

What a beautifully written poem.It captured the innocence, the mind set, and the overall appeal of a child. It was long but I never wanted to stop because it was so relatable and believeable. Fantastic

Wow. This really revived many memories in me. It's true. Ignorance is sometimes bliss. That's why children are so pure and precious. Totally bathed in innocence until the first evil taints it for eternity. I miss those days when the biggest drama was when that mean boy stole your crayon or your friend got a bigger cookiethan you did. And when skinned knees healer easier than broken hearts now. Most of all, the boundless imaginations that children take for granted. I think writers are something different, being able to retain that imagintion, though within limits, while others cast it away.
Oops. I really ranted. Haha. Amazing. I think we all can connect to this in one way or other. Very nice work!

i love this poem. it presents the innocence of a child not yet corrupted by society and the partially imaginary world that we all once believed in. i absolutely adore the view you presented throughout this poem and how it was written after the Fort Hood shootings. i really can relate to the ending- the idea of returning to that same innocence and gaining a peaceful state of mind as well as a peaceful society. i also find truth in the comparison between a child's perspective and "blindness". amazing write.

The ending is so true for our children today. They have no clue what a messed up world this can be. I hope and pray for change so my 6 year old son doesn't have to see to much destruction like we do today. Kids start pure like you and I did but then soociety can jade them robbing them of their ideal world. I enjoyed this poem thanks for sharing.

When we are children everything seems different, but when you experience the best experiences that affect us, we become adults ... although, with so few years we have .. it's sad ... the line full of sadness and melancholy .. Great job!!!!!

its quite sad but its true. when you are a child nothing ever changes or goes away and everything is beautiful!

An owl on the moon

2023 is here... May we make it so much more heaven than hell... Wishing all peace on earth... The night has a thousand eyes, And the day but one; Yet the light of the bright world dies Wi.. more..
