In an Age Unspoken

In an Age Unspoken

A Poem by An owl on the moon
"

A knight's tale... Thou shouldst whisper these words aloud, far from the maddening crowd…

"

In days of ancient grace disclosed

In an age unspoken, in the long ago

Lived a knight who fought ‘cross hell

To reach his fairest, Lady Ariel…

Sir Mercutio didst grow tall as a tree

Whilst journeying over snow and sea

Where golden dragons care to wander

In aimless worlds of flaming slumber…

And in the midnight of the darkish soul

He pondered the finest treasures untold

Though shadows swallowed jeweled gleams

He heard softest voice from shaded streams…

In this gleaming luster he couldst see her face

And perceive her voice in the ripples grace

Here in pools of liquid light’s soft sheen

Golden tresses displayed she who would be queen…

Now weighed he all the riches of the earth

And saw in this angel the greatest worth …

His heart awakened from deepest slumber

He journeyed east in terrors without number…

Fiercest days and coldest nights he trekked

Through marshlands, swamps to his neck

Done the raging storms of seas and sky

He now gazed into her glimmering eyes…

Gently then he didst take her in his arms

Whispered, holding her safe from harm

“As the rivers search to find the sea

I shalt ever always come for thee…”

Hearken to my words untold

When world is fierce and life is cold

True love’s the rarest jewel of all

Most precious gift on this celestial ball…

I think you can safely rest assured that ‘When world is fierce and life is cold’ I shall look to your poem of true love and valor to call upon the hope of chivalry and fairytale, and in every reading I am sure I will always find a pleasure as great as the first. I loved this, the rhyming was perfect, a beautiful melody to it and I very much enjoyed the content of it (I am a sucker for all things history and especially the medieval period). I think you capture the English view of heroism in this wonderfully but for definite the main reason I enjoyed it was simply because it made me smile. No matter how many times we read such things they always seem new and fresh and somewhat enchanting. Thank you for posting this, I really love it. It’s nice to see other writers on this site looking to the past for their inspiration. Well done!

This made me think of the poetry of Guy Gavriel Kay - such an elegance of cadence and word. In the hands of anyone less able it could sound trite, but this poem is nothing of the sort - lovely to read!

I like reading your poetry.. all seem to have the old English.. makes the poem and reading of it soft and gentle.. the words seem less sharp if you know what I mean..
Ariel a beautiful name and a beauty.. True love never falters this says to me, and can always be depended upon during our darker hours. And it is a gift, the most precious gift of all.
Beautiful poem.

I can tell that you put a lot of work into this one. The outcome is beautiful. The ending makes it more than a lover's account. It makes it a way of life. Something to consider during life's course. Well written!

This has such a grace, wonder, and beauty to it. It is a reassuring tale that I could read over and over, and with every time, get something new and soothing from it. The language is magnificent and I am glad that you didn't write this in the 'modern' tongue.

"Whilst journeying over snow and sea
Where golden dragons care to wander
In aimless worlds of flaming slumber…"

This was my favorite part because it brought such a magnificent and glorious image to my mind.

Thank you for sharing and please keep writing.

You are the definition of a true writer! Your talent never ceases in amazing me. I see you improve each time I read a piece of your work - and there are times when I may have huge pauses in my reviewing. You continue to stick with your poetry and I continue to see your growth. This poem is a fairy tale piece and I love how my imagination was taken to this time and place - for the moment. Thanks for sharing!
