If I Were a Girl...

If I Were a Girl...

A Poem by Steven Cash
"

I feel this is like a cross between Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" and Bruno Mars "Just the Way You Are".

"

If I were a girl, I’d love myself, despite what the guys may say

I would look in the mirror and see myself"beautiful in my own way

If I were a girl I’d not live and die by the love of a guy

If he can’t love me for who I am, then sorry, it’s goodbye

If I were a girl I’d take my hair and style it as I choose

It doesn’t have to be long and flowing, like women in the news

If I were a girl I’d know my clothes don’t have to come from Abbie and Fitch

I don’t have to be with the in crowd, who’d leave me in a ditch

If I were a girl I’d not sell myself cheap just cause a guy says I’m cute

And if he only wants sex from me, I’d simply give him the boot

If I were a girl I’d show the world I don’t have to be rail thin

I don’t have to heave my lunch so I can just fit in

But because I’m not a girl I can only tell you how I feel as a guy

Cause girls, you are precious. Don’t ever think that’s a lie

I don’t care how you look, what you have done or do

            I believe you are precious

            Just because you are you

My two favourite lines. Being a female myself, I have indeed thought these thoughts: "Im too fat, Im too thin, my hair is too short, my hair is too long, he really loves me, he doesnt love me at all..." so I'm SO GLAD you wrote something about this. Its really easy: girls just want to be reassured, and this for sure reassures us. Thank you for the kind words. Its beautifully crafted.

Steven, you have out done yourself. This is a great write. A very good message and very well composed.

It reads true, as though written from your heart. I hope it was.

Hmm... I often say I'm not affected by the media portrayal of women, but then I have to ask myself why I change my hair style 2 or 3 times every days (and always end up doing the same thing). I know society's views of women do affect me on a subliminal level. I'm not weak because I say I can't help it. I'm just realistic. It's completely impossible to shun the influences of the society around you.
If all guys thought girls were precious, the media wouldn't objectify them, and abusive men wouldn't hit them, and children wouldn't grow up being taught to want to look like barbie.
I think for some girls it is a conscious choice to try to be fashionable, but for a lot of girls they simply do not have a choice. I do not believe that I could completely ignore my weight or not care about how I'm dressed - and I do have a very strong personality and I very rarely follow trends.
It's all so much easier said than done.
Sorry for the feminist rage - I know you're only writing a lovely poem. :) Just food for thought, that's all. Next time you switch on the news and see an aging white guy sat next to a stunning girl, just stop and wonder how it affects you psychologically. :)
Thanks for the sweet poetry.
