Sepia Lullaby

Sepia Lullaby

A Poem by Chelsea Miller
"

A poem written for an English assignment based on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is intended to explore the sorrowful subject of Gatsby's impossible dream of a relationship with Daisy.

"

The lover marches ever near

Heart has frozen, head is clear,

Music playing all the while,

Drifting to her sepia smile.

So long she stood across the bay,

One simple stretch of sea away,

One stretch of arm from beach to beach;

A dreamer’s bridge within his reach.

So quickly now, the bay is passed,

Like traveling through the looking glass,

Cascading tears, gone is the strife

Of waiting,

Waiting,

All his life.

Roses coloured perfectly

Cover every vacancy.

Acquaintances, all lost in play,

Could not attend his last soirée.

Flashing lights;

Eternal hope.

Now candles

Beckon the eloped.

Laid to rest ‘fore

Empty pews,

Tears are shed

From lovers few.

Step by step,

Beat by beat

Two lives, now,

Finally,

Complete.

Forever in

Utopia,

In prefect,

Smiling

Sepia.
