my culture is not to your advantageA Poem by Cheyanna
My culture
Is not to your advantage How dare they embrace Cinco De Mayo When they voted for Donald Trump How dare they enjoy our Mexican food When you are trying to make us leave How dare you use us As your workers, your nannies But yet still treat us as if we are not human I am tired of my culture Being ripped from my arms And used against me My latina heritage Is only useful When you want something exotic My music is only appreciated When you want to dance To the beat of our land But yet as you dance You do not recognize us As a part of your world As our music flows through your feet As our food graces your taste buds As our celebrations are stolen Remember that we are people too That we are forced to learn your history, your language But mine is seen as an 'elective' Something that can be tossed aside As if we aren't something permanent My culture is only indulged when it comes to what you like But you disregard the problems that we face You soak up what we are born with And spit it back into our hands My culture is my identity And it is not to your advantage
