Autumn's Grove

Autumn's Grove

A Story by Nostalgicc

Excerpt from a horror short; obviously, I've been reading too much H.P. Lovecraft because this reads like stale imitation.

Since its settlement in 1831, Autumn's Grove-an isolated hamlet-has subsisted for over two centuries of self-containment. Its inhabitants-sleepy, reserved folks-creep on through the years with a marked degree of total indifference toward any form of tidings from the surrounding villages and the outside world. And thus it came as an unsettling shock when, approaching the close of the 19th century, the quiet hamlet became the subject of rumors and whispered stories of a terrifyingly macabre and wholly dark nature: devil worship, sacrificial killings, and degeneracy.

Sinister, thick forest completely encloses the hamlet on all sides and the only manner of reaching it is by a crude and faintly visible dirt pathway, winding its way through gnarled, reaching trees; for, to this day, Autumn's Grove remains cloaked in mystery. It receives no visitors, for the rumors circulated long ago have become entrenched in the general conscious: The hamlet is regarded by all with a congealed sense of aversion and abhorrence, directed at a community of people that have never been seen once since their entrance into the tangled and somber woods, that have never emerged from their seclusion.

At this point, you may as well be wondering: Of what importance to me is that wretched and ineffably nightmarish hamlet? Well, do not despair, reader, for it is of that account that I am about to tell. As I perceive it, no other living being on this earth has ever shared-and, furthermore, I hope will never have to-such an accursed and horrifying experience with me. My six hours in Autumn's Grove have left lurid imprints in my mind, the likes of which I have yet to rid myself of, and, I fear, I might never exorcise entirely.
