Obsession - a History Lesson in Modern Times

In a land
long, long ago
The people obsessed over
or should I say worshipped
gods of wood and stone
false gods - idols
created by the hand of man
followed by the papparazzi
existing in both heart and mind
yes, dear reader, the papparazzzi has existed
since the beginning of time
long before there were cars
in the form as they appear today

In a land
presently, present
The people continue to obsess over
or should I say continue and increase
their worship
of gods of celebrity, consumerism, materialism, gluttony, and otherwise lusty greed
created by the papparazzi in modern times
wrongly existing in both heart and mind
in the form as they appear today
to mention a few by name
American Idol, X-Factor, America's Got Talent
in the land of the free
and the home of the brave

This is not just a problem in America, dear reader,
Princess Diana lost her life to this phenomenon of papparazzi
Justin Bieber has filed a lawsuit against the papparazzi
and a recent high speed chase that ensued
while Justin Bieber was out enjoying his 15 minute ride of fame
who can blame him, dear reader, I know I can't
haven't you asked yourself at least once
I wonder what it would be like to have an over-abundance
of material wealth and celebrity; my own 15 minute car ride of fame
Justin's school, safety and innocence have been sacrificed
The headline read Justin Bieber talks openly about
his difficulty with school, his career and his fight with the papparazzi
I must interject, dear reader, isn't it wrong for us to rob a child
of the brief and fleeting 15 minutes of childhood
for our own selfish pleasure and gain
is it only me, dear reader, or do you also have difficulty
with this obsession
where are we headed with our misguided intentions
as we fail to protect and respect our future
why must we continue to adorn our mantels
with statues of celebrity, consumerism, materialism, gluttony and greed
until we learn from our past mistakes, dear reader,
history will keep repeating itself and
lives will be sacrificed foolishly with malintent
if only the life span of humankind could be increased long enough
to make a difference; even then the question arises
would we use our longevity for good

My friend the world is changing for the worst. They killed a friend of the Arab world and dragged his body through the streets. We gave that country a billion plus dollars. Time for the USA to bring home the soldiers and leave the Middle East alone. We need to close down the borders and use our oil from friends only. Need to be like WW2. Lock up the budget and quit giving money away we do not have. Thank you for the thought provoking poetry.
