My VoiceA Poem by Danielle MartinezWhen I was three I had selective mutism. This is my story in a poem.
Everyone has their fear
Mine was just a little different And early And different The teacher asked me I didn't answer She wondered why I didn't answer I was scared I didn't answer Because I was selectively mute And I didn't answer My brain inside crying with pain Wanting to get the words out Writhing in sadness But I didn't answer I finally did answer But it took a while But it hurts a little when I do And I panic and scream and fear every possibility Will I mess up? I'm going to mess up They're going to see me mess up They are going to see how I'm weak. So next time you see someone quiet They may not just be quiet They may be in pain So let them find their voice Although quiet, And although shy Although quiet It is their voice.
