This Street

Life's journey

This street is marred by cracks

from so many drives to nowhere

and strangers passing through

leaving trails of smoke drifting.

 

Though a bit dirty and dingy

its character still distinctly shines

from the constant touch of sunrays

upon the asphalt’s thick soul.

 

It’s survived so many floods

by letting the waters drain away

and stood the test of earthquakes

firmly planted on solid ground.

 

This street has been paved

by my own two working hands

with no destination in mind

just a way to take the journey.

 

Now as the road gets longer

I only hope the direction I took

will lead to the Garden of Eden

or at least a place to call home.

I love the parallel you drew here. Each man forms his own road, much like each man forms his own life. You've done an excellent job with the imagery. These lines were GOLD:

They just stood out in my mind so clearly. Likewise, this stanza was amazing:

What an outlook on life! I loved the analogy of a street that is battered, but still travel worthy and how you are paving it as you go. I loved the last two stanzas the most. I feel we all have our own streets and occasionally we intersect just to make the journey more bearable. This was a very good write. Don't know why but it reminds me of Telegraph Road by Dire Straights, that same yearning in a dark and dirty world. I hope you find you Eden, you never know it might be juat around the corner of that street.

This is a nice poem. I really like the first and last stanzas especially. I know my street is marred by many, many cracks. And aren't we all looking for a place to call home? Somewhere we can feel safe and loved, our own personal 'Garden of Eden.' Somewhere that we are accepted and loved unconditionally.

We all long for "a place to call home." I have one, but there are days when its "marred by cracks." I don't have a "destination in mind," but I continue on this journey because one day I hope to find my "Garden of Eden."
