The Soldier

The Soldier

A Poem by Derekv

.

I return, but the war never leaves,

a shadow lingers - in memories and scarlet dreams.

Some nights, I wake -

body trembling as my heart begins to race...

but the light never comes.

Memories burn beneath my eyelids - faces that are pale as death,

or bloody and broken and gasping for breath.

Gunfire rings like a scream in my ears -

will it ever fade, that old echo of fear?

Even now, with the war distant and gone,

it takes all that is within me to rise with the dawn.

.

I read your age and for one so young I applaud you for the reality of how a returned soldier serviceman would feel. The nightmares and the ptsd the dreams the guilt the terror of what they did and went through
My brother is 72 now he went Vietnam around your age in the seventies and my deceased uncles and father served in world war 2 my great grandfather served somewhere too
Your poem is a stark sad reality for them and many millions more of how they felt
Thanks for this great tribute so close to Anzac Day and of course other countries Memorial or Rememberance days
This was amazing 😉 ThAnkyou

I really love the description and symbolism. Rising with the dawn really sets the reader up to know that there is always the promise of a new beginning. Well done!
