Lifecycle

Lifecycle

A Poem by Audrey Howitt
"

a set of poems

"
Come to me my little one
and in between heart beats, join with me

To move as one

I will dance the scent of soft skin in the night of your presence

We are.
Two souls blink out of one pair of eyes
You are of me "and not.
Two souls, one pair of eyes.
Welcome.

Sleep, oh sleep my little one
Long day is done and gone
Your sigh escapes pink lips
And fades on dusk’s magenta sky.
Eyes of unceasing curiosity
Let go their vision
And lashes brush softest cheeks where they lie.
Sleep, oh sleep my little one
Night holds you fast
Between her darkened clouds
Stars wink their promises
As they cast your future with twinkling reserve
Their bright faces toward you.

I lag behind. My to-do list spills
Over into the crevices of my heart
As I try not to lose sight of love
In the midst of mountains of laundry.
Carpools and homework dominate.
I am too tired to dance now.
Time moves past us like sheets in the wind
Flapping so fast it is hard to see the ground.

Storm warnings.
Grey turbulent skies
Heavy with portent
Weigh heavily against my skin.
The skin that used to sing
Now chafes as winds blow.
In between squalls, we talk a bit
Before dark clouds gather again.

Fearful for you
I am swamped and mired in this letting go.
I face one way-
You another.
Fingers touching across a wide divide.
You turn, unconcerned
For I remain
Fingers part
You go.

Time to help me sleep my little one.
Long day is done and gone

A sigh escapes dry lips

And crosses the short path

Between life and death, hovering there

To slowly fade into the pink of dusk.

So short my time with you.
A blink, a nod, a turn of the head
Time closes its door upon me
My soul, bound to yours.

In you, the stars fulfilled their promises
Bright, your soul shines, so clear and strong
And blazes the way before me.
Fill me way with light as I turn and walk now.
Pink is now magenta.
Close my eyes, lashes rest now on slackened skin.

We have danced, souls touched
My skin has sung the song of our being together.
Until the next time?

I am at lost for words, for I can say nothing but beautiful work. This flows so well and the love in this piece is so touching.

I'd like to think that this is a beauitful tribute to Motherhood, but for some reason I doubt my own conclusion of this :)

The words are weightless and beautiful. I'm not sure if this is about a child... a lover? What ever the inspiration...it made for a magical timeless read. It was sad, but lovely how you described an emotion that speaks to all. Now what to do with it. Presentation maybe...get rid of the numbers and spaces. Do a center alignment with the words instead. Try it if you want....I think it will give it more visual appeal. Or copy the word play you did in the end. This was very creative.

'i'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep'...the whole long slow separation never stops all the way to the edge, but we leave behind the face of what we've done...this is a big canvas painted as a lullaby

This was beautiful! A mother yearning to keep her child close at heart, but as time nears to leave the nest mother is fearful of that separation, but knows that it is coming, but in her heart she knows the apron strings will always be attached! Great poem!

Very nicely done. Romantic, joyful and such celebrating the other with deep and tender love. I really enjoyed reading this.

Such sweetness, loving and gentle .. a silvery stream of words that has me smiling, nodding, understanding.

I wonder if you could make the above into eg four longer poems .. not necessarily joining the first with the second or whatever .. just a suggestion.
