Mama’s Lad

Mama’s Lad

A Poem by Debbie Barry
"

A new nursery rhyme, which popped into my head in the night.

"

Mama’s Lad

Where are you going, sweet Mama, today?

I go to the market fair, over the way.

What will you do there, fair Mama, so gay?

I go to sell eggs, which my hens daily lay.

May I go with you, dear Mama, do say?

Nay, wait here, keep watch for me, and do not stray.

Can’t you bide here, Mama, and with me play?

Nay, sweet lad, my own, I can no longer stay/
