Girl with a Broken Soul

Girl with a Broken Soul

A Poem by Doroteja Tia Tolic

Decades ago, there was a girl I knew
Decades ago, there was a person I couldn't save

Over the highlands and northern mountains
Far away in the place long forgotten

At the banks of a wandering river
Sat a girl not very different from me and you

Young, eyes full of hope
She dreamed with mind wide-open
And loved with her whole heart

By the time I sat beside her
She was already long gone
All the miseries drawn

Her clear blue eyes looked straight ahead,
but saw only pain
Her bright smile faded
She tried her best to stay sane

The cold winter wind made me shiver
But I wasn't going away from that river

She ghastly whispered her fate to me
But that bright, smiling girl was all I could see

The people!, she said
Whole world's wrong!
Her eyes still hollow with no trace of emotions

I tried
But I couldn't
Save the girl sitting next to me

So now only little pieces of memories are left
As I'm reminded that the whole world is foul
I remember the girl with a broken soul
